Volunteer Opportunities in a quaint, Mexican beach town

What do you think about a beach vacation combined with volunteering? Is that possible? YES! The Do Good as You Go Movement recently added a great place that can help you make volunteering and vacation at the beach a reality!

Along the west coast of Mexico, Do Good as You Go (DGYG) has established a collaboration with an organization that is making a great impact with the youth and members of the community of San Francisco (San Pancho), Nayarit with their community center. The location is amazing. San Pancho is on the Pacific Coast just one hour north of the bustling and overtly touristic, Puerto Vallarta and only a 10 minute drive north of the up-and-coming beach town of Sayulita. For overlanders, backpackers and fly-in/fly-out travelers alike, this location is an easy and ideal choice.

The development of Entreamigos started with a small & simple initiative; invite artists and workshop leaders to sell their products in a provided space, in exchange they give workshops to youth and adults from the community of San Pancho.

Through the years, the small gallery showcasing works of local artists has seen a few additions and changes to create what is know today as the Educational Community Center.

After 10 years of operation, Entreamigos provides a library, a computer center, a language center, a recycling center, workshops on art/culture and sports and physical activities for children, youth and members of the community.

One of the principal interests of Entreamigos is the support for education of youth and children in a fun and lively manner as well as for the local staff of the center so that they can contribute to the change in their homes and communities.

Entreamigos has become a vital part of the not only the community but also the structure and economy of the city. They are the third highest employer in the town, surpassed only by the local hospital and school system! And the recycling program has transformed the town’s relationship with waste. Because of the deep involvement that this organization has with the community, there are limitless ways that DGYG volunteers can connect and support continued growth. Be it through offering workshops, support to local artists-entrepreneurs or through supporting the recycling or the sports program…even simply connecting to the library and working with them to continue the growth and usage of this amazing space and program! If anything, by visiting and purchasing the artwork and craftsmanship of the artists fostered and supported on-site is a way of Doing Good. There are roughly 10 local artisans whom have found their way through the training and support system of Entreamigos, and there is a group of local students supporting their college education through several small, collective businesses.

“This organization has a very ‘hands off, but all in’ sort of feeling about volunteers. You are encouraged to do all you want and will be supported in your efforts. They are very welcoming and loving people who allowed my children to take part in the workshops they offered free of charge because I was teaching a class.”  –  Rachel Berger (DGYG Volunteer)

The amazing travel aspect is that Entreamigos is only 10, short minutes walking distance to the beach!

For the Love of Education: Art for a Cause Impact Update!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

In the spirit of this day celebrating love and giving, we would like to update you on some exciting new developments at Do Good As You Go.

We are very pleased to share with all of our wonderful supporters how some of our partner organizations and individual youth are benefiting from the donations received at the June, Art for a Cause event in NYC!

Today’s update is all for the love of education!  Meet Danelli, Alma and Miriam, three talented youth photographers from Mexico, whose lives have been impacted by photography workshops and college fund support !

Thank you for your continued support!♥

Emerging Artist: Danelli!

Danelli was 15 years old  when started her first photo workshop in 2010 with Do Good as You Go volunteer Eric Ibarra. Since then she has participated in three more workshops! From the beginning,  Danelli showed a great interest in photography and was a dedicated student in general. Aside, she had “the eye”.

Danelli grew up in the Buen Pastor, a home for girls whose families cannot provide for them, are struggling with domestic abuse or drugs and alcohol. Danelli’s parents left for the United States when she was about eight years old to seek employment and have not returned. She grew up in a home with her older brother and sister as her caregivers.

Danelli made the choice to stay return to live in the Buen Pastor when her sister became pregnant at age 15. When it came time for her to enter high school and leave the home, she asked if she could stay one more year. Danelli explained that she knew that she needed the structure and “parental support” offered by the madres (nuns) and Tere the social worker.

“Truthfully I am so happy!  It is such a great opportunity you all are giving me and I want to take advantage of it 100%,”

Danelli has made incredible decisions for herself as a teenager and now,  as a young woman. After graduating high school, she was working to save money to attend university, in hopes to study tourism and English, as she sees a wider variety of employment opportunities for herself on this path.

We are happy to report that with the help of the sale of her image at Art for a Cause exhibition in June, she has been taking private English classes and preparing for the entry exam to the University of Guanajuato.  Your support will allow her enter the University and cover tuition to complete her first year in the Tourism program!  Danelli

is excited to be taking advantage of all the opportunities provided to her, and we are so happy to see the impact this funding has provided!

Check out more of Danelli’s beautiful photography below and in our Anthology!

Do Good As You Go: Doing Good with KA Lite!

In this newsletter we bring you news about our partnership with The Khan Academy, and the most recent workshop completed by our volunteers which brought the KA Lite program to our partner, The Napi Friendship Center in Alberta, Canada.

Do Good As You Go is excited to be both part of the KA Lite network, an innovative program that brings the “online learning revolution” to rural communities with limited internet access, and to provide another opportunity for travelers to do good as they go!

Do Good As You Go and Khan Academy:

Creating Classrooms Around the Globe.

Introducing one of our latest partners, The Khan Academy!  With a mission to “provide free first-class education to anyone anywhere”,” K.A. truly provides a global classroom online, with over 4,200 videos in 18 languages!  A library of micro-tutorials on subjects ranging from math, science, finance and history, thevideos enable students around the world to learn at their own pace everyday.

Learn more about the Khan Academy mission with this Ted Talk video.

Taking access to education one step further is KA Lite, an offline version of Khan’s educational model. Once installed, the program can run on just about any device, even the low cost Raspberry Pi. Now the 65% of theworld’s population without internet connectivity can potentially access this new way of learning with the help of organizations like Do Good As You Go!

The launch of our KA Lite partnership!: In July, two DoGood As You Go volunteers, Jennifer and Witt of When Sparks Fly, set up the KA Lite system for our partner, TheNapi Friendship Center in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada.  The NFC is an over 40 year old community based Aboriginal institution, with a mission to promote cross-cultural understanding, and provide support and programs for the urban-living and transitioning Aboriginal populations.

Jennifer and Witt installed, ran and taught others the KA Lite system and developed instructional handouts to leave for use at NFC. The universal access to education which KA Lite provides is so important to areas such as Pincher Creek, Alberta and to our partner NFC.

Many rural Aboriginal communities have limited or no access to the internet and their schooling only teaches a limited range of subjects.  For this reason, and many more, we are excited about the collaboration with the KA Lite program and the impact it will on the lives of so many of the communities we work with throughout the world. We are ever-grateful to Let Sparks Fly for rolling out this collaboration with our North American partners. Next stop Inuvik! We would love for more volunteers to help spread this remarkable program!  Perhaps you?
